Nickname and school colors chosen in June 1960
The Mason County Board of Education approved the nickname "Royals" and the blue and white school colors on June 6, 1960. The nickname and colors were recommended by a committee comprised of the chairman of the various PTA's at the county schools, Superintendent Hubert Hume, school board chairman Walter Worthington and the Instruction Supervisor of the new high school, Charles Straub. The Royals nickname was and is pretty rare. Cincinnati's NBA team was the Royals and was originally the Rochester Royals. The Kansas City Royals baseball team didn't play its first season until 1969. Mason County was the only Kentucky team nicknamed the Royals until Rose Hill Christian School opened in 1980. Mason County and Rose Hill were both in the 2003 state tournament. Mason County beat Ballard in the championship game. Ballard had defeated Rose Hill in the quarterfinal round.
