Fred Hester played for the Royals in the 1960s and has served as an assistant coach, head coach and athletic director. When Allen Feldhaus retired as the Royals' coach in 1991, Hester, a longtime assistant coach, was promoted to head coach. The 1991-92 season was the first following the merger of Maysville and Mason County. Hester combined the coaching staffs from both schools and the Royals won five straight 39th District championships and three consecutive 10th Region titles. Mason County won the AAU state championship in 1993. The Royals were ranked No. 1 in the state for the first time in school history in 1994. Under Hester, the Royals won 56 consecutive home games and had a 72-game winning streak vs. 10th Region teams.
