Kelly Wells was hired as Mason County's eighth head coach in 1998. Wells was an all-stater at Rowan County. He played one season at Tulsa University before transferring to Morehead State University. He was the head coach at Marion County for two seasons before coming to Mason County. Wells guided the Royals to three consecutive 10th Region titles. The 2002-03 team won a school-record 35 games and the basketball program's first state championship. The 2003-04 team won 33 games and was the state-runner-up. Wells compiled a record of 172-56 (75.4%) in seven seasons at Mason County. He was twice named Kentucky Coach of the Year. Wells coached the Kentucky All-Star team in 2004. He left Mason County in 2004 to become an assistant coach at Hawaii-Pacific University. Wells was promoted to head coach at Hawaii-Pacific in 2005.
