The Fieldhouse hosted its first game 45 years ago tonight

The Mason County Fieldhouse hosted its first game 45 years ago tonight. Mason County opened in 1960 without a gymnasium. The Royals played their home games in the Washington Elementary School gym or at the Maysville High School gym. Mason County never lost a game at Washington. Voters kept rejecting a special tax to fund construction of a new gym. Proponents of a new home for the Royals didn't give up. The special tax, which also funded construction of an industrial arts building, was approved by 135 votes in a special election on Feb. 24, 1962. The first bids for the gym were considered unacceptable, and were rejected on Dec. 21, 1962. New bids were opened in January 1963. East End Construction Company of Maysville was awarded the contract on its bid of $802,598. An open house was held on Jan. 10, 1965. Thousands of people toured the spacious facility. Then, on Jan. 15, 1965, the Royals defeated Ripley 82-63 in the first game in what later became known as The Fieldhouse.

Allen Feldhaus takes Mason County to new heights

Mason County's second coaching hire in the summer of 1975 was a turning point for Royals basketball. After Pete Gill resigned just two months after accepting the coaching job, Mason County turned to former University of Kentucky basketball and baseball player Allen Feldhaus.
Feldhaus was a basketball, baseball and football star at Boone County High School. He played for Coach Adolph Rupp at UK. After playing minor league baseball in the Washington Senators' farm system, Feldhaus began his coaching career at Russell County. He was out of coaching and working in Frankfort when he accepted the Mason County job. Feldhaus brought discipline and a tough, man-to-man defensive philosophy to the Royals. He guided Mason County to its long-awaited first trip to the state tournament in 1981. The Royals were the state runners-up in 1981. Mason County had an undefeated regular season the next year, finishing with a 31-1 record. The only loss was in the quarterfinal round of the state tournament. Mason County also won 10th Region titles in 1985 and 1987 under Feldhaus. His Mason County teams won nine district championships. Feldhaus coached his three sons- Allen Jr., Willie and Deron- at Mason County. He was the coach of the Kentucky All-Stars in 1982. Feldhaus was twice the Courier-Journal Kentucky Coach of the Year and won the Kentucky Post Coach of the Year award two times. He picked up his 500th career win in 1990. Feldhaus was also the baseball coach and athletic director at Mason County. He retired in 1991. In 16 seasons at Mason County, Feldhaus had a record of 325-136. He is the all-time winningest coach at Mason County.

Pete Gill hired as Royals' coach in May 1975, resigned in July 1975

Forty-six year old Pete Gill was hired as the head coach of the Royals in May 1975. Gill, a graduate of New Albany High School in Indiana and Georgetown College, had been a coach for 18 years, the last four at Georgetown High School. Gill never coached a game at Mason County. He resigned in July 1975. Gill had agreed to move to Mason County, but personal reasons prohibited him from doing so. His resignation cleared the way for a coaching hire that would take Mason County Royals basketball to a new level. More on that tomorrow.
